A Treasure Trove of History

BATTLE ROCK
This is where the oldest townsite on the Oregon coast got it's start more than a century and a half ago when Capt. James Tichneor landed and his crew fought for their lives during a two-week siege.

At the southern end ot Port Orford. The Battle Rock "Wayfinder" has the Visitor's Center and some shops.
CAPE BLANCO LIGHTHOUSE
One of the 'Crown Jewels" of local history, the Lightouse at Cape Blanco is the oldest contiually lit lighthouse on the coast of Oregon. There are guided tours to the beacon room.

Go 4 miles north of Port Orford on Hwy. 101 and turn left at the Cape Blanco sign, go 5 miles to the end of the cape.
HUGHES HOUSE
The second of the 'Crown Jewels' is the 105 year old home of Patrick Hughes. The home is open in season and is kept in immaculate condition.

Same directions as above, but is one mile before the lighthouse. Follow the signs, turn to the right and go to the bottome of the hill.
COAST GUARD MUSEUM
The Port Orford Lifeboat Station and Coast Guard Museum is 'Crown Jewel' number three; a fascinating collection of artifacts and photos from 75 years ago.

Take 9th Street in Port Orford west two blocks to Coast Guard Hill Rd. Follow road up hill to end, about a mile.
PORT OF PORT ORFORD
One of the most unique docks in the world. The port with no bar to cross is home to commercial and sport fishing and other water recreation. A must see experience to see the boats hoisted in and out of the ocean.
From Hwy. 101 and 6th Street go west one and a half blocks and continue down Dock Road. There are several parking areas. Obey all signs.
HISTORIC HOMES
How about a home built entirely from a shipwreck, or a Sears & Roebuck kit home of the 20's? Port Orford has them and more.
